Records show the use of hot and cold stones before the Shang dynasty in China (c.a. 4000 BC). Native Americans traditionally used heated stones in ceremonial sweat lodges. Shamans and healers would not only use their hands for manipulation and healing but also utilise 'tools' of the earth, such as crystals and stones.
