That long-awaited holiday has finally arrived. You’ve bought your sun protection, a new pair of flip flops and a fabulous book to help you unwind….so just a few “essentials” to fit in the case.
We always think we’re fully prepared but often get blind-sided with an unforeseen niggle. I’m pretty sure we’ve all wasted a few precious hours of holiday sunshine trying to find a pharmacy, only then to battle with the language barrier in our plight to find a remedy and end up paying an extortionate price. Check out our top tips on how Essential Oils can be your vacation saviour.
Too many hours spent soaking up the rays without sufficient protection. Our skin is our body’s largest organ and can damage easily. Mild surface burn can be treated easily but any burn which effects below the first layer of skin is considered urgent, and may require medical treatment. The Aloe Vera plant has a lucrative juice sealed within its leaves. This powerful substance is packed with vitamins and minerals as well as vital amino-acids which give it such nourishing and skin healing properties. It is also anti-septic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory – ideal for soothing burned, sore and cracked skin. Available in a Lotion or Gel, these Aloe products can be blended with just a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil which is renowned for its skin healing benefits when used on burns.
Different to sunburn, heat exhaustion occurs when you’re exposed to too much sun without sufficient fluids. Symptoms include feeling faint, fatigue, low blood pressure, nausea and possibly vomiting. It can usually be tackled quickly by moving to the shade and flushing your body with plenty of fluids. This should result in starting to feel better within 30 minutes. Try adding a drop of Peppermint Essential Oil behind the ears which will help to cool the body down. Alternatively carry an atomiser of Peppermint Hydrosol to use as a cooling face mist which will also help to bring your temperature down.
Insects & Bites
Don’t let the little critters ruin your vacation. Protect your environment by adding 8 drops of Citronella and 4 drops of Lavender to a cotton wool ball and keeping it nearby, or applying it to a ribbon and hanging it from the curtain poll above open windows. This will deter bugs from entering and also provide a cleansing scent as the breeze passes through. This could also be tried with Peppermint instead of Lavender. For a handy atomiser disperse a blend of 5 drops of Lavender, 5 drops of Rosemary, 5 drops of Eucalyptus Citriodora and 5 drops of Tea Tree into 10ml of Vodka or Witch Hazel, then mix into 100ml of distilled (or boiled) water. Apply liberally to all areas of uncovered skin, through your hair and on your clothes. Do this an hour before you’re due outdoors and apply regularly to top up. If you’ve been bitten, apply neat Lavender or Tea Tree Essential Oil directly to the bite regularly.
You’re not sure what it is but it comes recommended by the waiter, so you throw caution to the wind and order it. And then……oh dear, it doesn’t agree with you. Add 2 drops of Ginger, 2 of Lemongrass, 2 of Fennel and 2 of Peppermint to 20ml of Carrier Oil. Ginger is particularly good for soothing an upset stomach, Lemongrass is anti-parasitic, Fennel is a diuretic and will aid digestion whilst Peppermint will cleanse and help combat nausea. This blend can be used to massage directly on the stomach in a circular motion, or dabbed on the wrists, temples and neck to inhale its purifying aroma.
It’s typical that a bothersome bout of toothache should strike when you’re so far away from home…and your dentist. Keep a bottle of Clove Essential Oil to hand. Rub a drop of oil directly onto the gum around the tooth; it’s a great analgesic and anti-septic. You’ll feel instant soothing relief but will need to keep applying.
And Lastly…Be Prepared
No one wants to fall ill just before or whilst away on holiday. For the weeks approaching your departure you can diffuse some immunity boosting oils to help you avoid coming down with a sniffle. Any individual oil or blend of Tea Tree, Ravensara, Lemon or Thyme when added to a burner or diffuser will help to stave off germs and parasites, and help to strengthen your body’s natural defences.
