Essential Oils for New Year’s Detox

Detox

Considering embarking on the “obligatory” New Year cleanse? Do you need some help staying focussed?

Inevitably most of us will have devoured a richer diet over the holidays, have had more late nights, got less exercise and possibly consumed more alcohol units than we do at any other time of the year. The sacrificial “January Detox” is often portrayed as a quick fix solution to rectify our joyful over-indulgence; yet studies have shown that a month boot-camp of painful self-denial won’t actually undo all the damage caused over recent weeks; and committing to a healthier lifestyle proves much more triumphant.

For those of us who like the ritual of a healthy New Year’s resolution, it’s important to remember to be realistic with our expectations; and know how to regain focus when our best laid plans go awry. There are a handful of Essential Oils which can help support the efforts of a healthy lifestyle change, and will amplify the results alongside good nutrition and exercise. Oils can be employed using a two prong attack, inhalation or topically. They can help to balance the appetite, reduce cravings and false hunger pangs, aid digestion, increase energy levels, reduce fluid retention, breakdown fatty deposits, boost circulation, stimulate lymphatic drainage and tone the skin. In addition, they will help you maintain the focus, determination and clarity of mind to continue your plight.

Here’s a list of helpful pointers to support a healthy lifestyle …

Break Habits and STOP Cravings
There are certain times of the day when you know a down fall may occur. Late night snacking or just a few biscuits while dinner is in the oven…it can’t hurt can it? You can be prepared to nip it in the bud before your mind even starts to wonder. Bergamot is known to balance the appetite to control over-eating caused by stress. It relieves tension and uplifts the mood, whilst providing a cleansing, citrus scent. You can carry a Nasal Inhaler or drop just 2 drops on your sleeve to inhale as and when you feel the need.

Mood and Metabolism
There are a few oils which will help balance both your mood and your metabolism. Rosemary is mentally uplifting and helps improve the metabolism, Peppermint offers digestive cleansing and calms cravings, whilst Ginger provides a warming scent which will stimulate circulation and help you to focus. By gently Vapourising or Diffusing these oils around your home or office you will be unconsciously helping to strengthen your determination.

Massage Base for Stubborn Areas
Regardless of how nutritionally balanced we are, we’re all prone to areas of stubborn cellulite or orange-peel skin; usually around the thighs, bottom and stomach. Blend 20 drops of each Grapefruit, Juniper and Fennel Essential Oils into 50ml of Peach or Apricot Kernel oil to make a decongestive massage oil. These anti-oxidant oils are known to help draw toxins from the body and breakdown fatty deposits. This is best used after dry skin brushing. (Always dry brush towards the heart)

Water Retention and Oedema
It is often claimed that water retention occurs when water is scarce. The body starts to hold onto the fluid and store it. An increase in fluids, reduction in caffeine and a combination of lymphatic drainage massage with some powerful Essential Oils will help clear the congested area. Grapefruit is a stimulant to the lymphatic system and any condition whereby toxins are not being eliminated effectively. Geranium has a tonic effect on the Liver and will also help dispel toxins along with toning the skin. Combine 30 drops of each of these Oils into a Base Carrier Oil or Cream and massage around the swollen areas, for example the ankles and lower legs. Massage direction towards the heart.

Before Dinner Defence
If you’re prone to over-eating or missing that “full” signal which the brain allegedly sends to the stomach, then prior to a meal you can introduce a quick ritual which will help you to eat only as much as you need. The scent of Grapefruit or Cinnamon will promote the feeling of fullness, help dissuade you from over-eating and uplift your mood. Our Rollette dispensers or Nasal Inhalers provide a handy pocket-sized solution to carry an oil blend with you.

Digestive Health
You may eat a well balanced, nutritious diet yet still suffer digestive discomfort. Gastro-intestinal complaints such as bloating, gas, diarrhoea, constipation, heartburn or indigestion could be caused by intestinal parasites which may be inhibiting the effective digestion and absorption of nutrients from food. This could lead to many of the symptoms mentioned above; and also weight gain or loss. Lemon Essential Oil is a powerful anti-bacterial oil which acts as a tonic to the gut. It will neutralise acids in the intestines and cleanse the digestive system. It also helps support the function of both the Liver and Pancreas. Peppermint can help treat indigestion, colic and general stomach pain by reducing inflammation.

Important Tips
You must aim to increase the amount of water in your diet. If, like many, you find it difficult to drink the obligatory 8 glasses per day then you can focus your efforts on eating more water-rich foods. Also try to eliminate caffeine from your diet all together, and replace with fruit tea’s or hot lemon.

Note: Many of the Essential Oils recommended in this article are stimulating and/or uplifting. It is advised not to use them too close to bedtime to avoid sleep interruption.
