Christmas, as they say; is the season to be jolly. A time to rest, rejoice and make merry as we celebrate with friends, family and loved ones. But for many, it’s a very stressful time of the year. Take a look at our handy rundown of the top 24 aromatherapy tips to help you enjoy Christmas and get the most out of the festive period.
1. The 3 Essential Oils that no Christmas should be without…
Make sure you’ve got sufficient stock of Orange, Frankincense and Myrrh. These are the ultimate Essential Oils for Christmas. Add them to your Vaporiser to create a festive atmosphere that will get you in the mood for the Christmas period; and boost your immunity at the same time! Blend suggestion: 3 drops of Orange and 2 drops Frankincense and 1 drops Myrrh.
2. Be Prepared! Stave off Cold and Flu this Christmas.
Don’t let a bothersome bug spoil the festive celebrations for you and your family this year. Get super organised and set up your Vaporiser in your office or at home with a few drops of immunity-boosting Ravensara. This anti-viral oil will keep your environment free from germs and help keep you fighting fit and ready to party!
3. Don’t Panic!
So you’ve made your list and checked it twice. You know what gifts you need to buy and how much stuffing and sherry will be consumed. It’s a manic time of the year with so much to buy, wrap, clean, cook and organise… but do not despair. Keep a handy ready blended Rollette in your purse or pocket with a re-focussing blend of Rosemary and Lemon Essential Oils. A 10ml Rollette will need only 5 drops of each oil in a base of your favourite Carrier Oil and can be applied on the wrists as required.
4. Get ready for the “BIG Festive Clean”!
You’ll no doubt want to prepare your home for all the visitors and festive activities planned for the coming weeks. Making your own cleaning products is not only cost effective, greener and a great antiseptic; but also enables you to tailor your scent to create the mood. A simple surface spray can be made from Distilled Water, Vinegar and a blend of Essential Oils. We all know Lemon, Grapefruit and Tea Tree are great at degreasing, but why not try Orange and Clove to add a festive twist. In an airtight container add Eucalyptus and Thyme to some Baking Soda – this makes an ideal scrub for stubborn sink stains or on the hob. Or try adding just a drop or two of Lime to your dishwasher detergent for a fresh scent and a squeaky clean finish.
5. Those poor, tired feet….
All that Christmas shopping and frantic running around will play havoc with your feet. So why not dig out the footbath or even the washing up bowl, fill with hot water and treat yourself to a foot soak. Lemongrass, Lavender and Marjoram will deodorise, deflate and soothe tired tootsies. Follow the soak with a smothering of Songbird Naturals Lavender Reflexology Wax and pop on a warm pair of socks while you rest with a mince pie. (Mince pie obligatory for this treatment)
6. Scent your Christmas Tree.
If you’ve opted for an artificial Christmas tree this year as you were fed up of falling pine needles, you might be missing that rustic Christmas tree smell; reminiscent of childhood memories. Just FAKE it. Scent your tree by adding a few drops of Pine, Cedarwood or Frankincense to cotton wool balls and hide them in the depths of the tree, or place in a container at the base. For a more natural look drop the Essential Oil onto pine cones to make hanging decorations. Whichever method you choose; remember to refresh the oils regularly.
7. The LBD…..
So, you’ve got BIG plans for a BIG night out and you need to look perfect in that LITTLE black dress. One of the best detoxing Essential Oils is Juniper Berry. This diuretic oil will increase circulation, help shift the accumulation of toxins and fatty deposits and tone the skin. Combined with skin smoothing and hormone balancer Geranium – you can create a wonderful treatment to help prepare your body for the party season. Add 20 drops of Juniper and 20 drops of Geranium into 50ml of Apricot Kernel Oil and apply liberally to thighs, bottom and stomach after dry skin brushing. Repeat daily.
8. First Aid Kit
There’s bound to be a few little accidents over the festive period. We all know you shouldn’t be in charge of basting the turkey after too many Babychams. The two Essential Oils every First Aid Kit should contain…Lavender and Tea Tree. Lavender applied directly to a scald, burn or abrasion will start the healing process immediately and reduce scarring. Tea Tree used to bathe an open cut or wound will clean the area and keep infection away.

13. Someone please hide the CHOCOLATES….!
For those of us who are emotional eaters we often struggle to rationalise how much is moderate. Throughout the festive period – we can let our emotions run away with us. Do those tempting treats keep calling your name? There’s a simple way to help intercept the emotional triggers to keep irrational “snacking” at bay. There are a handful of Essential Oils which when inhaled can activate a signal to the brain, giving us a sense of feeling full or satisfied. Orange, Tangerine and Grapefruit Oils are pungent and refreshing, and will distract our brain from the instinct to snack. They are also used for emotional support and to soothe the nervous system. Peppermint Oil is a great digestive aid and will cleanse the stomach and delay those “false” hunger pangs.
14. Handy home scenting tips with no extra effort….
With just a few drops of Essential Oil in all the right places you can create the perfect festive environment. Perhaps some Orange on your Tumble drier filter for a citrus burst with every use. How about a few drops of Pine on your Vacuum filter to disperse a wonderful aroma as you clean. You can even add a drop Patchouli into your fabric conditioner which will stay with your clothes until the next wash. Carpet Powder made from scenting Corn Flour with your favourite Essential Oils will lie in the depths of your carpets and the fragrance will remain even after vacuuming. Scent your logs before putting on your open fire to give a subtle scent as they warm the room.
15. Nip that bug in the butt!
Can you detect the onset of a cold or flu just as the party season is getting started? Typical hey. Well at the first sign of a sniffle run yourself a hot bath with a few drops of Eucalyptus Radiata and Tea Tree and draw that virus out of the body before it takes hold. You may need to repeat over one or two nights but then there will be no stopping you on the dance floor.
16. Handmade with LOVE….
We’ve all got that family member or friend who never fails to send us great presents; yet we always struggle to find the right gift for them. Here at Purple Flame we firmly believe that a handmade, bespoke gift is one that’s most gratefully received. Choose from our range of fabulous base Lotions, Creams, Bubble Bath and Butters, pick from an array of dazzling Bottles and Jars and then decide what wonderful gift you’d like to create. Don’t forget to check out our Natural Dried Flowers and Fragrance Oils for more handmade gift ideas.
17. Delegate the washing up…
Seems like you’ve had your hands in the sink all Christmas; scrubbing the parsnips and washing the dishes. Your hands will start to feel dry and cracked if you’re not using a good barrier to protect and replenish moisture. Our Songbird Naturals Bee Balm is excellent for everyday use as a skin conditioner and barrier cream especially for working hands; and may also help with severe skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. This would also make a great gift for a friend or family member who is prone to dry, cracked hands.
18. Will you over-indulge this Christmas?
Indigestion can put a dampener on your celebrations and slow you in mid swing. It can range from chronic pain to just a mild sluggish lull. Inhalation is the gentlest way to get Essential Oils into the body so they can set to work. A blend of stomach-settling and digestive-aiding oils like Ginger and Peppermint will provide instant relief. You can either add them to a Vaporiser or Burner, or just 2-3 drops into a Nasal Inhaler. In addition, sip water and try to move around a little to help move the stubborn blockage along.
So, you’ve eaten way too many sweet treats and desserts….we’ve all been there. You’ve probably got more chance of seeing Rudolf than getting a Dentist appointment over the Christmas holidays so you’ll need to keep a bottle of Clove Essential Oil to hand just in case. Rub a drop of oil directly onto the gum around the tooth; it’s a great analgesic and anti-septic. You’ll feel instant soothing relief however this is only short-term….you’ll still need to see the dreaded Dentist.
20. Poor Circulation
As the frosty weather fast approaches you may be one of the many sufferers of poor circulation in your extremities, usually hands and feet. Symptoms can include numbness, tingling, throbbing pain or cramps. For some, this may be a common ailment caused by cold weather or resulting from other health issues. Stimulating Essential Oils such as Rosemary, Basil and Cypress will help to increase the blood flow to the extremities, alleviate discomfort and bring warmth. These can be used in a foot spa, bath or in an oil blend and applied directly to the area. Be aware: If you suffer from health complaints such as Diabetes, heart or artery conditions – you will need to seek advice to determine the oils you can safely use.
21 “Perhaps a little water with that Whisky?”
The party is in full swing and the festive fizz is flowing, and then ….oops, you’ve drank a little more than you should. Dehydration will lead to a throbbing headache and the toxins left behind by the alcohol will leave you with a churning stomach. Essential Oils can help cleanse the body and provide a tonic to the nervous system – but firstly you’ll need to replace some fluids with water. Peppermint Essential Oil will help purify both the head and stomach with every inhale of its fresh, clean scent. Scatter a few drops around the base of your shower and pop in the plug, let the steam rise and soothe your airways. The hot steam will also help you sweat out the rest of the toxins. If Peppermint is not a favourite, Spearmint makes a cooling alternative. Failing that, Ginger will help settle the stomach and the zesty aroma of Lemon will clear a foggy head.
22. Running out of steam…?
Come on, you’re nearly there. It’s a busy time of year with so much to do and organise. Make yourself a handy Nasal Inhaler of Grapefruit, Bergamot and Ginger Essential Oils, just 2 drops of each. These oils are guaranteed to perk up your concentration, instantly restore your energy levels and get you back up and running in no time.
23. Muscle Aches and Spasms
Aches and pains are something we all experience from time to time, usually when we’re overexerted or run down. During the busiest time of the year – we don’t have time for such inconveniences. Add 3 drops of Marjoram Sweet and 2 of Black Pepper into a hot bath and soak. This blend can also be added to a base massage oil. Infuse your chosen base oil with a little Arnica or St John’s Wort which are particularly good for reducing inflammation and soothing aching limbs.
24. So, you’re all ready…..and RELAX
When the presents are all wrapped, the house is clean and cupboards brimming with festive fare; take 5 minutes for you. Blend a soothing synergy of Lavender, Neroli and Frankincense just 2 drops of each into a hot bath…..and relax. To relieve scalp tension add one or two drops of Roman Chamomile into your hair conditioner for a luxurious, calming treatment. And a vital touch is the Rose, Geranium and Lavender Candle burning while you soak.
